Cabinet clears 55,000-tonne sugar import

Bangladesh has given the green light to a Singaporean firm to buy 55,000 tonnes of sugar from the international market through open tenders.

The cabinet committee on government procurement, headed by the finance minister, cleared the import of the essential commodity on Wednesday.

Cabinet Division Additional Secretary Mostafizur Rahman told the media that Singapore-based Agrocorp International will supply the sugar at $465.27 per tonne through their local agent Globo Piu Import Export Ltd.

The import would cost around Tk 2.63 billion, he added.

Rahman said the committee also cleared the appointment of China National Machinery Import and Export Corporation, which has been nominated by the Chinese government, as the contractor for the Dhaka-Ashulia Elevated Expressway at a cost of Tk 125.66 billion, reports bdnews24.com.
