The local administration imposed section 144 in Kamarkhara union of Tongibari upazila as two factions of Awami League called meetings at the same venue on Friday.
Hasina Akter, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), said Amir Hossain, president of Kamarkhara union unit Awami League, called a meeting at around 9:00am in support of the ward committee which was announced recently while Anis Haldar, vice-president of the unit, called separate meeting at the same place opposing the new committee.
The ban was slapped in a bid to avoid further trouble, she said.
All types of political gatherings will remain prohibited in the area till 6:00pm on Friday, according to a news agency report.
Additional police have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order situation.
