As the month of Ramadan is set to begin next week, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has suggested that people should offer Taraweeh prayers at home instead of at mosques amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

While suggesting this during a video conference telecast from her official residence Ganabhaban in the city on Thursday, she cited Saudi Arabia’s suspension of prayers at mosques.

She also pointed out measures taken by authorities of other religions in restricting prayers at their places of worships, including the Vatican City.

According to reports, Saudi Arabia, the birthland of Islam, is considering suspending Taraweeh prayers at mosques in case the COVID-19 pandemic remains the same.

The prime minister urged everybody to abide by the guidelines issued by the Islamic Foundation, a government organisation under the Ministry of Religious Affairs in Bangladesh, amid the unprecedented health crisis.
