Khulna jute mill workers start receiving arrears

The Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) started clearing the dues of the workers of state-owned jute mills in Khulna region following their hunger strike.

“We've already started paying about Tk 35 crore to the workers of eight jute mills in Khulna region from Monday,” said Md Banijuddin Mia, BJMC’s regional coordinator, reports UNB.

Earlier, a letter in this regard reached BJMC from Jute Ministry, he added.

Meanwhile, Banijuddin said, the pending wages of Alim Jute Mill workers were not disbursed over its ownership complication.

President of Platinum Jute Mill CBA Shahana Sharmin said they have started paying pending wages of four weeks through their bank accounts. “Workers don’t need to come to the mill to receive their wages,” she added.

However, Rois Uddin, project head of Star Jute Mill, said, “We’ve received our four weeks’ pending wages though we’ve 14 weeks’ wages left to be paid.
