IGP urges people to refrain from Eid outing

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr Benazir Ahmed on Tuesday urged the people to stay home and not to travel to their respective hometowns on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr amid the pandemic coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak.

“Stay there, wherever you are . . . Please refrain from unnecessary shopping spree and Eid outing,” the IGP told a crowded media briefing at Rajarbagh Police Lines Auditorium this afternoon, reports BSS.

Referring to the prayers of Eid-ul-Fitr, the greatest religious festival of the Muslims, Benzir, in line with the government’s directives, reiterated that the Eid jamaats (congregations) should be held inside the mosques by maintaining all sorts of social distancing and necessary health rules.

Benzir requested the home-bound travellers, who remained stranded at ferry terminals or any other places due to the government’s restriction on travelling, to return to their respective places of residence. “If you need any help to return, the law enforcement agency would provide all-out assistance,” he added.

The police chief categorically termed the Eid festival of this year a different one amid the worldwide health crisis and repeatedly requested the people not to go out unnecessary even for a silage moment.

The people, who have been trying to go to their hometowns before Eid-ul-Fitr ignoring the government’s travel restrictions amid coronavirus outbreak, Benzir said, “This is really a different one. We will celebrate the Eid differently abiding by the government’s directives.”

Noting that the life of each citizen is very costly to the state, the police boss said police are working relentlessly to ensure the safety of people, state and society.

About coronavirus crisis, the IGP said: “We will enjoy many more Eids in our life if we remain alive.”

Additional IGP (Administration) Md Moinur Rahman Chowdhury, Additional IGP (SB) Meer Sahidul Islam and Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner (DMP) Mohammad Shafiqul Islam, among others, were present the press conference.
