Flood situation improves, death toll rises to 258

All the major rivers of the country are flowing below their respective danger levels while the deaths from floods rose to 258, according to the official data.

“The Ganges-Padma Rivers are in steady-state, which may remain such in the next 24 hours and except the Surma, the major rivers of the Upper Meghna Basin in the North-Eastern region of the country are in falling trend,” said the flood forecast of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC).

The Brahmaputra and Jamuna rivers are on a rising trend, which may continue in the next 24 hours. However, the major rivers of the Upper Meghna Basin in the North-Eastern region may rise in the next 24 hours, the FFWC, under the Bangladesh Water Development Board, said further.

Meanwhile, deaths from floods across the country rose to 258 amid the pandemic.

Among the dead victims, 212 drowned, 28 died of snakebites and 15 were killed in thunderstorms, while three lost their lives to other diseases, according to a report of the Health Emergency Operation Center from June 30 to September 8.

Meanwhile, some 80,252 people were infected with waterborne diseases, including some 700 fresh infections, it said, adding, some 27,199 people in flood-hit areas are also suffering from diarrhoea.

Bangladesh has experienced one of the worst floods in history this year.

Every monsoon heavy rains in neighbouring India adds huge inflow into downstream Bangladesh which brings an additional burden to the country to deal with, according to experts.

Meanwhile, floods incurred an estimated TK 13.23 billion agricultural loss as of August, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) in its weather forecast said that the axis of monsoon trough runs through Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal to Assam across northern part of Bangladesh.

“Monsoon is active over the northern part of the country, less active elsewhere over the country and weak over North Bay,” it added.

Light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at many places over Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions and in a few places over Rajshahi, Dhaka and Chattogram divisions and in one or two places over Khulna and Barishal divisions with moderately heavy to heavy falls at places over the northern part of the country, said BMD on Tuesday.

Day and night temperatures, however, may remain almost unchanged over the country.
