Nobel Laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus has secured bail from a labour court in Dhaka in connection with three cases filed over sacking of three employees of Grameen Communications he heads as its chairman.
Dhaka 3rd Labour Court acting Chairman Zakia Parveen passed the order as Dr Yunus surrendered before it on Sunday noon, according to local media reports.
Two other accused in the cases -- Grameen Communications' Managing Director Naznin Sultana and Deputy General Manager Khandaker Abu Abedin -- secured bail in the same cases on October 9.
On July 9, three junior MIS officers of Grameen Communications filed the cases with the court against the above-mentioned accused on charges of dismissing them in June for their role in forming a workplace trade union.
The next day, the court asked the accused to appear before it on October 8.
As the day when the accused were due to turn up before the court turned out to be a holiday, the court held its proceedings the following day, October 9.
On that day, however, except for Dr Yunus, two other accused -- appeared before the court and managed to secure bail from it in the cases.
And the court issued the arrest warrant against Grameen Communications chairman, Dr Yunus, for his failure to obey the court summons to appear before it.
Explaining the Nobel Laureate's failure to entertain the summons, his counsel Raju Ahmmed had told the court that his client was abroad on business and would appear in court on his return.
With the arrest warrant, fears of arresting or harassing him on arriving home from abroad came up and he had the court issue an order not to arrest or harass him until November 7.
Grameen Communications is an organisation under the Grameen Trust.
