DNCC mayor inaugurates bypass underground drain at Kalshi

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam Saturday inaugurated the bypass underground drain at the city's Kalshi area which will now drain out 25 per cent rain water.

DNCC engineering department has activated only 20 per cent capacity of the drain.

The city corporation cannot open the drain with 100 per cent flow due to some technicalities in 600 metres which has fallen in the Kalshi flyover project.

The engineering department of DNCC will negotiate with the 17 ECB of Bangladesh Army to complete the sand filling work in 300 metres as soon as possible so that the piped drain can be operated in full swing, the DNCC authority said.

DNCC organised a programme at Kalshi area where Atiqul Islam spoke as the chief guest after the project inauguration.

Mayor Atiq said that the bypass drain is a temporary solution and not a permanent one to relieve Kalshi from waterlogging.

“We have to reclaim the grabbed canals in Mirpur. We have to recover Kalshi canal, Sangbadik Khal, Baishteki Khal and Baunia Khal to carry the rain water up to Turag river,” said Mr Atiq.

The mayor announced that DNCC will start eviction drive to recover roads and footpaths after Eid. It will also conduct drive to recover Roopnagar Lake.

He warned that there will be zero tolerance in case of illegal occupation of footpaths and roads which obstruct people’s movement. He also warned that DNCC will take action against those who dump garbage in the canals.
