NATORE, Feb 01: The farmers of the district have exceeded the target set for maize cultivation for this season.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DEA) office sources, growers had achieved a bumper production last season so they have brought more land under the farming of the crop.
Some 5,015 hectares of land have been brought under the farming of maize cultivation this year. Maize cultivation is going on in full swing in Boraigram, Shingra, Guridaspur, Bagatipara, Lalpur and Sadar upazilas of the district, DAE sources added.
In a recent visit in Nandowalia, Duaria, Bangapara, Hapania, Chandapara, Kadimachlap, Dhupa areas, this correspondent found maize cultivators were taking care of their cropland. High yield Donne-111, Nupur-123, Supershine and some local maize varieties are popular in the district.
"I am cultivating maize on 45 decimals of land this year," said farmer Jahurul Islam of Bojoypur village under Lalpur upazila. He again said, "I am expecting to make over Tk 34,000 if the weather condition remains favourable."
Deputy director of DAE Md Rafiqul Islam said, "We have encouraged the marginal peasants to bring new land under maize cultivation to increase output."
The official further said maize farming is increasing in the area.
