'Justice for Abrar' protests spread outside Dhaka

Demonstrations by students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) demanding justice for the killing of their fellow Abrar Fahad rolled today (Tuesday) into the second day.

Starting their protest for the second day, the protesters took out a procession on the campus around 10:00am.

They also placed a seven-point demand:

  1. Capital punishment for the killers has to be ensured

  2. The killers have to be identified within 72 hours and expelled permanently

  3. The case has to be disposed of through a speed trial tribunal within a soonest possible time.

  4. The vice chancellor has to explain his failure to show up on the scene even 30 hours after Abrar was murdered. Similarly, the head of the directorate of students welfare has to explain by 5:00pm why he fled the scene.

  5. The administration has to expel those students who were involved in torturing [ragging] others -- both physically and mentally -- having different views. Similarly, those previously involved in similar incidents at Ahsanullah and Suhrawardy halls have to be expelled permanently by 5:00pm, October 11, 2019.

  6. The provost of Sher-e-Bangla Hall has to be withdrawn by the same time for his complete failure to ensure security for the students.

  7. The administration has to compensate Abrar's family and bear all the costs involved in the case proceedings.

The protesters, who took position in front of the university Shaheed Minar after the procession, vowed to continue their protests until their demands are met.

Similar protests have spread out to other campuses too demanding justice for Abrar murder.

In front of Dhaka College, one of Dhaka University's seven affiliated colleges, many students of those colleges formed a human chain demanding justice for the killing of Abrar, UNB reported.

A local private television channel also ran a live report from Rajshahi University, in front of which main gate, hundreds of students took position demanding justice for the BUET student murder this morning.

All the above-mentioned protests demanding justice for Abrar have been organised under the banners of general students.

Earlier on Monday, some leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) allegedly beat Abrar, 21, a resident of Sher-e-Bangla Hall of the BUET, to death and dumped him on the same hall staircase.

After he was found lying dead there by students and teachers around 3:00am, BUET medical officer Dr Md Mashuk Elahi was called up and he checked and pronounced Abrar dead.

Police arrested nine leaders and activists of BCL in connection with the killing of Abrar on Monday and his father filed a case against 19 BCL men with Chawkbazar Police Station.
