BD records nine more COVID-19 deaths, 306 infections in 24 hours

Bangladesh recorded nine more coronavirus deaths and 306 positive cases in the last 24 hours to 8:00am on Saturday.

With the latest, the total death and case count reaches 84 and 2,144 respectively, said Dr Meerjady Sabrina Flora, director at the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), while briefing the media live on the daily COVID-19 bulletin at 2:30pm.

Meanwhile, eight more people recovered from the infection during the same period under review, taking the tally of the recovered to 66, she said.

The country’s single-day highest number of coronavirus deaths and cases – 15 and 341 –  was reported respectively on April 17 and 16.

The IEDCR confrrmed the country’s first known COVID-19 cases on March 07 and the first death from the disease on March 18.

Globally, as of Saturday afternoon, a total of 2,253,593 people have so far been infected by the virus, according to worldometer.info, a website that provides real-time updates.

Of them, 154,331 people, or 21 per cent, died and 574,818, or 79 per cent, recovered from the virus disease, the website data shows.

Again, of 1,524,444 people who are currently infected, 1,467,311, or 96 per cent, are in mild condition and 57,133, or 4.0 per cent, are in serious or critical condition, it adds.

The novel coronavirus disease was first reported in China in December last year.

As the COVID-19 began sweeping across the world, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared it a pandemic on March 11 this year.

The deadly viral disease has so far affected a total of 210 countries and territories and two international cruise ships around the world.
