The Bangladesh Embassy in Tokyo opened a helpline to provide assistance to Bangladesh expatriates in Japan as Typhoon Hagibis made a landfall on Izu Peninsula, southwest of Tokyo.
All Bangladesh nationals staying in Japan currently have been urged to contact with the embassy through emergency helpline numbers 080-4456-1971, 070-32024400, 080-40656601 if required, said a message, issued by Bangladesh embassy in Tokyo for Bangladesh nationals.
No casualty of Bangladesh nationals has been reported so far, it added.
According to UNB and BSS, the embassy also urged all Bangladesh nationals living in Japan to follow the directives of Japan Meteorological Agency and local authorities properly.
The typhoon, bringing in heavy downpours and winds, made a landfall on Japan's main island of Honshu on Saturday evening, while the country remains under red alert as an unprecedented emergency warning was issued for Tokyo and six prefectures.
The Bangladesh Embassy is closely monitoring the steps taken by the Japanese government and remains in touch with the Bangladesh community representatives constantly, according to a message issued by the Embassy for Bangladesh nationals.
The Japanese weather agency issued an emergency warning over Typhoon Hagibis ahead of its landing on the Izu Peninsula before 7:00 pm, according to Kyodo News.
Japan was at its highest alert level as the typhoon threatened to sweep over Tokyo, with over 3 million advised to evacuate, train operators suspending most services and airports shut down in the metropolitan and surrounding areas, it reported.
Typhoon Hagibis, meaning "swift" in the Philippine language Tagalog, could dump amounts of rain not seen since a deadly typhoon in 1958, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
