Bangladesh sees record daily rise in coronavirus cases, deaths

The coronavirus outbreak in Bangladesh is showing no sign of slowing down as the country on Wednesday witnessed a record rise both in daily cases and fatalities.

Confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the country reached 17,822 on Wednesday, a rise of 1,162 from the previous day, while related deaths increased by a record 19 to 269, according to data released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Of the newly deceased, 12 were male and the rest were female.

Nasima Sultana, additional director general (admin) at the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), presented the latest figures while briefing the media live on the daily COVID-19 bulletin at 2:30pm.

The fresh coronavirus infections were found after testing 7,900 samples across the country in the last 24 hours to 8:00am today, Nasima said.

Also, 214 more patients have recovered from the disease during the period, taking the total number of recoveries to 3,361.

Meanwhile, the global death toll from coronavirus has reached 293,088 as of Wednesday noon.

It has so far infected 4,355,455 people around the world, according to Worldometer - a website that provides real-time updates.

Of them, 2,451,946 are currently being treated with 46,336 remain in serious or critical condition.

So far, 1,610,421 people have recovered.

The novel coronavirus disease was first reported in China in December last year.

As the COVID-19 began sweeping across the world, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared it a pandemic on March 11 this year.
