Bangladesh sees highest single day spike in coronavirus cases

Bangladesh confirmed 887 new coronavirus infections on Sunday, bringing the total number of cases in the country to 14,657.

This is the biggest single day spike in infections since the first cases of the virus were reported on March 8.

Meanwhile, 14 more people died of the lethal disease in the last 24 hours.  With the latest, the death toll from COVID-19 now stands at 228.

Among the fatalities, ten were male and the rest female.

Nasima Sultana, additional director general (admin) at the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), disclosed the information while briefing the media live on the daily COVID-19 bulletin at 2:30pm.

The fresh coronavirus infections were found after testing 5,738 samples in 36 labs in the past 24 hours, she said.

Besides, the recovery count also jumped to 2650 after 236 patients were discharged from hospitals during the period under review.

The global death toll from coronavirus has reached 280,470 as of Sunday noon.

There have been 4,103,537 confirmed cases around the world after the highly contagious disease was first reported in China in December last, according to worldometer, a website that provides real-time updates.

Of those infected, 2,379,609 are currently being treated with 47,679 being in serious or critical condition.

As the virus began sweeping across the world, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the coronavirus crisis a pandemic on March 11.
