A host of world leaders, including Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammad and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, have given their consent to attend the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibar Rahman’s birth centenary programme which will kick off in March this year.
Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen made the disclosure on Tuesday. Talking to the newsmen after a meeting of the centenary organising committee, the minister said, former Indian President Pranab Mukherjee, leader of the Indian Congress party Sonia Gandhi, former UN secretary General Ban ki Moon are also expected to attend the programme in Dhaka
But the minister made it clear that the invitations to attend the centenary programmes were extended to selected global leaders.
The minister also mentioned that the Bangladesh Missions around the world will organise various types of programmes highlighting the life and ideals of Bangabandhu.
There will be art exhibitions, cultural programmes and symposiums in different parts of the world to mark the centenary year, he added.
Dr Momen said that one of the main objectives of the programmes is to highlight the recent achievements of the country under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
These programmes will project how Bangladesh has emerged as the role model of development under her leadership, and now it is on way to become a middle income country, the minister said adding that a reasonable budget has been allocated for the Missions to organise these programmes.
He also mentioned that a number of countries will name their roads after Bangabandhu.
The Bangladeshi diasporas abroad have also been requested to observe different programmes to mark the centenary.
