The Local Government Division under the LGRD & Co-operatives Ministry has so far suspended a total of 56 public representatives for their alleged involvement in misappropriation of relief materials meant for distribution among the poor.
Twenty chairmen and 33 members of different union parishads (UPs), two councillors of municipalities and one member of district council were suspended until Monday for their alleged involvement in the relief anomalies.
Meanwhile, the government suspended a councillor of Brahmanbaria municipality for allegedly preparing a list out of nepotism for aid to be distressed among the poor during the coronavirus pandemic.
The Local Government, Rural Development And Co-Operatives (Lgrd- Co-Operatives) Ministry in a circular on Sunday last suspended Md Makbul Hossain, a councillor of ward no. 10 of Brahmanbaria sadar municipality.
Makbul Hossain allegedly included names of 15 well-off persons, including his family members, in the list for receiving rice under open market sale (OMS) programme of the government.
The LGRD & Co-operatives Ministry has taken action against the UP chairmen and members under section 34 (1) of the Local Government (Union Parishad) Act 2009 while for district and municipality councilors under section 31 (1) of the Local Government (Pourashava) Act, 2009.
