People hardly get benefits of the Right to Information Act 2009 (RTI) as some 75 per cent of them do not know about the law, according to a report.
Although 25 per cent people across the country are aware of the law, 20 per cent of them do not have adequate knowledge about it, depriving them of their crucial rights and disrupting transparency and accountability of the government, the report said.
The report was disclosed at a function titled ‘Right to Information Law and Fight against Corruption: First Decade of Experience of the Law and Way Forward for Future’, organised by Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) at its auditorium in the city on Thursday.
The programme was arranged on the occasion of International Right to Know Day 2019, which is observed globally on September 28 every year since 2002.
Professor Afsan Chowdhury presented the report, which was gathered by ‘Media, governance and diversity research centre run by BRAC University’ at the function while Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, Executive Director of TIB, spoke on the occasion.
Shusashoner Jonno Nagorik (Sujan) secretary Dr Badiul Alam Majumder was present at the function while Dr Ananya Raihan, founder and member of DNet, among others, attended it as a panelist.
