As many as 673 new dengue patients were admitted to hospitals in 24 hours till Friday morning.

Among them, 229 were hospitalised in Dhaka, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said.

Until Thursday, 3,029 patients were undergoing treatment at various hospitals across the country.

Bangladesh has been fighting an uphill battle against dengue this year. Dhaka is at the centre of the outbreak.

Since the beginning of this year, a total of 79,367 people were hospitalised with dengue, most of them in Dhaka, until Thursday. Of them, 76,141 made full recovery, according to the government.

The huge number of patients put a severe strain on the already overwhelmed medical system, reports UNB.

Since January, the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) received information about 197 dengue-related deaths. It has so far reviewed 101 cases and confirmed 60 dengue deaths until Thursday.
