10th anniv of Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Foundation celebrated

Speakers stress discovering inner strength of youth

The Student Counselling and Guidance Office of University of Dhaka celebrated the 10th Anniversary of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Foundation Bangladesh.

The celebration was held at the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban of the university on Thursday.

University of Dhaka has been patronising The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award since its inception in Bangladesh from 2008 and promoting youth development altogether.

The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award is a designed programme to developing the youths having an age group from 14 to 24. This programme acts as a discovery engine in building inner strength and sense to locate unthinkable measurement in self-development to achieve greatness and recognition.

John May, Secretary General, The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Foundation UK, and AK Shamsuddin Khan, Chairman, Board of Trustees, The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Foundation Bangladesh, were present at the event as guest of honour and special guest respectively.

Prof Dr Akhtaruzzaman, vice-chancellor of University of Dhaka, spoke at the function as the chief guest to celebrate a successful decade of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award in Bangladesh.

Addressing at the function, Mr May said, "The award can make a transformational difference to a youth's life holistically and it has the power to bring significant change to wider society.”

Mr AK Shamsuddin Khan considers it a tool for development of the whole human being by providing a unique rewarding agenda that fills the gap left by formal education.

Pro-VC, deans of faculties, directors of different wings, chairpersons and student advisors of departments, provosts of residential halls, award coordinator, award leaders, distinguished teachers, members of Board of Trustees and members of Executive Committee of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Foundation, among others, attended the function.

Prof Dr Mahjabeen Haque, director of Student Counselling & Guidance Office, and also coordinator of Duke Programme in DU, and Rizwan Bin Farouq, member,  Board of Trustees of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Foundation Bangladesh, also attended the event.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Foundation Bangladesh is also going to hold a grand celebration of its 10 years of operation at Gulshan Club in the city on Friday.
