Ten people went missing when a passenger boat sank in the Teesta River in Burirhat area under Kurigram's Rajarhat upazila on Sunday noon.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Rashedul Haque said the boat from Burirhat sank around 11:00am due to strong currents in the river while heading towards Sitabkhan.
Krishna Chandra, officer-in-charge of Rajarhat Police Station, said the boat carrying 40 people aboard sank in the river after hitting a portion of an embankment.
Thirty of the passengers managed to swim ashore while the others went missing, UNB reports.
Divers of the Fire Service and Civil Defence are searching for the missing passengers.
Thousands of people, including relatives of many of those missing, have gathered on the banks of the river.
